How assessment works

Before assessment

Students receive the task instructions, assessment criteria and due dates, and may ask questions about the requirements.

Submitting work

Written work must include a completed, signed cover sheet. Students should keep a copy of every task submitted.

VET outcomes

Tasks are marked Satisfactory or Not Satisfactory. All tasks must be satisfactory for a unit result of Competent.

Feedback

Assessors provide written feedback and advise students of the result and any required resubmission.

Attempts and reasonable adjustment

VET students receive one further attempt when a task is Not Satisfactory. If the second attempt is unsuccessful, additional training and assessment may be required and an additional fee may apply.

Reasonable adjustment may be available for disability, illness or special circumstances. It can include accessible resources, adapted facilities, extra time or another suitable way of gathering evidence, without changing the competency standard.

Speak with your assessor early if you may need an adjustment or academic support.

Assessment quality

  • Assessment follows the Principles of Assessment and Rules of Evidence.
  • Tasks address the requirements of the relevant unit or course.
  • Students must demonstrate the required skills and knowledge in appropriate contexts.
  • PIC systematically validates its assessment practices and judgements.
  • Assessment instructions, marking guides, recording tools and mapping documents are maintained for each unit.

Academic integrity

Students must submit their own work. Plagiarism, cheating, contract cheating and collusion are academic misconduct and may lead to investigation and disciplinary action. Sources must be acknowledged, and students should ask their trainer if they are unsure how to reference or collaborate appropriately.

Appeals, work placement and course credit

Assessment appeals

A student who disagrees with an assessment decision may lodge an appeal under PIC’s Complaints and Appeals Policy and Procedure.

Work placement

Where placement is part of a course, students must meet the placement requirements and follow the workplace and PIC arrangements.

Credit transfer

Equivalent previously completed nationally recognised units may be considered after valid evidence is provided and verified.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Relevant skills and knowledge gained through work, study or life experience may be assessed through PIC’s RPL process.

Student support and improvement

PIC asks about academic support needs before enrolment and provides or arranges suitable support where it can. Feedback from students, staff, industry, validation and quality reviews is used to improve training and assessment.
